Evolve and Adapt - Liam Quinn '22

Evolve and adapt. These 3 words have guided the Student Life Team over the past year and a half with distance learning, but they are especially relevant in current times. With COVID-19 guidelines changing every week, the Student Life Team is always ready to adjust our plans. Our goal is to not only ensure that students have fun, but also to ensure that we do it safely. One good example of this was the first rally of the year. With COVID-19 guidelines preventing us from holding it indoors and the raging heat of California afternoons making it hard to hold it outdoors, we were forced to cancel the event. Rather than giving up and allowing students to miss out on a vital part of the high school experience, we chose to hold a shortened version of the rally during lunch. Although it looked a little different than usual, it still had all the markers of a great event. The volleyball and football teams faced off in a set of challenges to see who would reign superior, just as they would during a normal rally. The girls and boys from each team competed in water balloon tosses, push-up contests, cheering matches, and more. During this time, students were on the edge of their seats in the amphitheater, cheering on their chosen team and waiting to find out who would come out on top. After an entire lunch break filled with activities and competitions, the winner was finally revealed: the volleyball team had beat the football team. Cheers erupted in the amphitheater while the football team stood there waiting to find out what their loss would mean. Once the crowd had settled down a bit, Colin, our Commissioner of Rallies, faced the students and made the big announcement. As a result of their loss, the football team will have to attend the next volleyball home game in full dress attire. When lunch finally came to an end, students of all grades walked to their classes with a smile on their face, excited to see the football team at the next volleyball home game. This excitement and school spirit has been lacking for so long, and we are so excited to be able to bring it back to the Lasallian school community during the upcoming months.
