College Process

The purpose of this page is to outline the college counseling program and calendar at La Salle High School. Additionally, it serves as a reference for students and parents who are searching for the right colleges to submit an application.

Junior Year College Calendar

All Year

  • Take the most challenging courses you can to demonstrate your readiness for college
  • Engage in extra-curricular activities that are aligned with your interests
  • Take leadership roles in clubs, activities, and volunteer in service organizations
  • Demonstrate interest to the colleges that you are seriously considering by visiting, checking out their booths in college fairs, and contacting their admissions offices



  • Take the PSAT
  • Attend the College Night for Juniors 
  • Attend the Los Angeles Area college tour (October 7th)


  • Register for the February ACT during mentor period (


  • Prepare for the ACT
  • Register for the March SAT (



  • Fill out the College Planning Survey for Juniors


  • Take the ACT exam at La Salle
  • Attend the Bay Area college tour (February 6-7)
  • Prepare for the March SAT


Meet with your college counselor to initiate college planning - discuss personal goals and preferences, initiate a first version of your college list, discuss future standardized testing based upon your PSAT results, and decide on next steps


  • Research colleges suggested by your college counselor - read college guides, visit websites, speak with friends, family, La Salle faculty, and alumni – and review the options with your family  
  • Visit colleges during school holidays 


  • Take the SAT
  • Register to re-take the SAT or ACT in May or June as recommended by your college counselor


  • Register to re-take the ACT or SAT in June as needed and in consultation with your college counselor
  • Attend the La Salle College Forum – students and parents
  • Attend the NACAC college Fair
  • Visit colleges during spring break 


  • Take the Advanced Placement (AP) exams


  • Register with for scholarship information
  • Retake the ACT or SAT as needed
  • Take the SAT subject tests if the schools you are interested in require or recommend them. 


  • Visit colleges as recommended by their college counselor
  • Write a first draft of your personal statement (a 1-2 page essay on a topic of personal interest or passion)

Senior Year College Calendar


8/1:  Common Application (Common App) opens


  • Begin a file for each college
  • Get off to a good start academically
  • Regular registration deadline for October SAT Subject Test
  • Regular registration deadline for October ACT
  • ACT administered
  • College Fair-St. Francis HS, 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm date: TBD
  • Regular registration deadline for November SAT Subject Test

September – November

  • College reps visit La Salle;  (over 100 reps visit La Salle—take advantage of this)
  • Attend local College Receptions or Open Houses (see Google calendar for dates)

September – January

  • Colleges conduct interviews if requested to do so


  • Continue work on college essays
  • Plan on-campus college visits
  • 10/1 Filing period for Cal State applications begins.  In order to ensure admission into the impacted campuses and/or majors of the CSU system, we recommend applying to all CSU campuses in October.
  • 10/1 CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE is available online
  • SAT Subject test administered
  • ACT administered
  • Cal Grant GPA Verification form for all seniors will be sent electronically by La Salle
  • File FAFSA as soon as possible after October 1
  • Students will be able to submit a FAFSA® earlier.  Students will be able to file a 2017–18 FAFSA as early as Oct. 1, 2016, rather than beginning on Jan. 1, 2017. 

October – November

  • Request teacher and counselor letter of recommendations –please use forms provided by counseling department
  • Continue working on applications 
  • Applications and Letters of Recommendation. Take your time when filling out applications. It is an enormous amount of electronic filing/ paperwork, so set aside serious time in order to do the job properly. Applications should be neat and accurate. All private colleges require a letter (or two) of recommendation. Prepare your request for teachers well in advance, three (3) weeks minimum.   Your College Counselor writes all Secondary School Reports (SSR). 


  • Most Early Action and Early Decision application deadlines are this month
  • 11/1 – 11/30:  Filing period for UC applications. This filing period is absolutely inflexible.
  • Regular registration deadline for December SAT Subject Test
  • SAT Subject Test administered
  • Regular registration deadline for December ACT
  • 11/30 – Last day to submit UC and CSU applications
  • CSU or UC application questions? See your College Counselor for assistance.


  • SAT Subject Test administered
  • Last time to take SAT Subject test for UC Schools
  • While SAT Subject Tests are not required, some campuses recommend that freshman applicants interested in competitive majors take the tests to demonstrate subject proficiency.
  • ACT administered 
    • *Last time to take ACT test for UC
  • Financial Aid workshop for Senior parents 


  • Mid-year reports will be sent by your College Counselor
  • Check for scholarships (beware of deadlines)
  • One more semester to go…~ AVOID SENIORITIS ~   


  • Check that colleges have received all materials: application, test scores and financial aid form
  • Carefully read all information from colleges and submit any additional information they may request
  • Continue to check for scholarships
  • Register for AP exams


  • UC decisions will be e-mailed/ postal mailed this month
  • If colleges request additional information, send it to them immediately
  • Register for UC and CSU placement tests  


  • Check e-mail and postal mail for college admission decisions
  • Financial aid offers will begin to arrive—check your postal mail and on-line portals
  • If you are on a wait list, write a letter of sincere interest and send any supporting material you can
  • Make a final decision, and mail the enrollment form and deposit check to the school you select before May 1 (the enrollment deadline for most schools). 


  • AP exams
  • Complete housing forms
  • Write “thanks, but no thanks” letter to colleges you will not attend
  • Write a thank you note and share your college news with teachers who wrote your letters of recommendations
  • 5/1 - Enrollment deadline for most schools
  • Complete on-line College Graduation and Decision on-line survey
  • Commencement Exercises       


  • Confirm college with your College Counselor for final transcript mailing
  • Make sure you have responded to all requests by your college


  • Remember to thank everyone who helped you this year: your parents, teachers and friends.
